Assassin’s Creed Syndicate thoughts Part 1
So it’s happened at last, Ubisoft have announced their next installment in the Assassin’s Creed series by the name of Syndicate and It looks dull as hell. Now all thoughts and comments i’m about to spew forth will be coming from my impressions on the footage that Ubisoft have released in the last week or so.
First up we have the reveal trailer
Nothing really that wrong with the trailer other than being a bit boring. The narration is all very trite and the various drawn images on screen really aren’t that great in quality, they’re alright just nothing special. The trailer does hint at some of the games focus, the London setting, gangland warfare and a bit of class based division all thrown in for good measure
First off, I’m pretty keen on the Victorian London setting. No era really defines London as much as the Victorian era, built on the blood and toil of the industrial revolution, the hundreds of years of blood money from slavery and planting itself as an economic superpower in it’s own right (Seriously, for non-brits, London is almost another country from the rest of Britain). London as a location is going to be one full of oddly shaped buildings and narrow streets, perfect for parkouring around. What we’ll see in the next video is their focus on carriages for transport which I’ll talk about a bit later.
The gangland stuff is certainly interesting but it’s going to be ruined some what by the games story for sure. Assassin’s Creed has always had trouble with shades of grey, you’re either an Assassin or Templar so the gang structure is going to be taking a very similar path for sure. There’s never going to be any third parties you have to parley with, you’re just going to be surrounded by other assassin’s and cutting Templar throats. I’ve always wanted for the these games to feature more third parties who aren’t evil or good, but with whom you must contend. It Would actually bring some issues of morality up, having the player be forced to kill people who aren’t evil but who just get in the way. Of course this is a series which deals with real morality exceptionally badly and will probably continue doing so for the foreseeable future.
The themes of class division have always been prominent in other Assassin’s Creed games for sure, but have always been given only lip service, a trend I’m pretty sure will continue in this game as well. The Assassins have always been played up as the ‘have nots’ while the Templars are the “Haves”. Wealth has been the one reason that the Templars keep coming back, game after game, even though their always beaten in the last game pretty badly. What I’m sure this game will have you do is kill a load of poor cockney cannon fodder before having you stab a posh bloke, then allow the self-righteous protagonist to feel good that he’s fighting for the people (But not the people he just slaughtered)\
So that’s part one of my thoughts on Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Part two I’ll be discussing the pre-alpha footage they’ve released and why it’s awful.
